Rutherford Outdoor Coalition: Connecting Our Community with Nature

The Rutherford Outdoor Coalition (ROC) has been enhancing our local outdoor experience since 2003, transforming Rutherford County, North Carolina into a destination for nature enthusiasts. From developing miles of trails to organizing community races, ROC brings neighbors together through shared adventures and a love for our beautiful natural surroundings.

Mission Statement

ROC’s mission speaks to the heart of what makes our community special: “to inspire connections to nature and community through sustainable outdoor recreation, education, and service in and around Rutherford County NC.” This vision guides their work in maintaining outdoor spaces that bring us all closer together.

Key Programs and Initiatives

The organization offers several outstanding programs that showcase the natural beauty of our region:

  • Trail Development and Maintenance has expanded local outdoor access through projects like the impressive 13-mile Thermal Belt Rail Trail, Buffalo Creek Park, and Weed Patch Mountain
  • Annual Race Series has been bringing community members together since 2011, featuring 12 races annually that attract over 1,200 runners from across our region
  • Cycling Tours including the popular Tour de Pumpkin offer scenic 100K and 50K bicycle routes through our picturesque countryside
  • Guided Outings provide accessible opportunities for hiking, paddling, cycling, running, and equestrian activities, with most events free and open to everyone in our community

Volunteer & Community Involvement

ROC thrives through the active participation of local residents who share a passion for the outdoors. Neighbors can join trail projects, help with fundraising events, support festivals, lead group outings, or participate in community clean-ups. Special volunteer roles like Trail Boss and River Steward allow community members to adopt and care for specific trail sections or waterways. Bi-monthly information sessions welcome newcomers looking to get involved in these rewarding activities.

This vital community organization operates through a combination of donations, grants, sponsorships, and memberships.
